Comcast Expands Rural Broadband Access in Fresno County, Supports Local Education

Comcast is advancing digital connectivity in rural Fresno County through a strategic broadband expansion project targeting the Riverdale area. The telecommunications giant will bring high-speed, symmetrical Xfinity broadband to over 160 previously unserved locations, representing a critical step in bridging the digital divide in underserved communities.

The $1 million infrastructure project, supported by a Federal Funding Account grant from the California Public Utilities Commission and Comcast's private investment, underscores the company's commitment to expanding technological access in rural regions. This expansion is part of Comcast's broader $4 billion technology and infrastructure investment across California in recent years.

Beyond infrastructure development, Comcast has demonstrated a comprehensive approach to community engagement. The company gifted laptop computers to all eighth-grade students in Caruthers and contributed $10,000 to the Caruthers Unified Education Fund, directly supporting digital literacy and educational opportunities.

Local leadership has praised Comcast's multifaceted approach. Orin Hirschkorn, Superintendent of Caruthers Unified School District, highlighted the significance of not just providing infrastructure, but actively seeking ways to support community needs. Buddy Mendes, Fresno County Board of Supervisors Chairman, emphasized the potential economic and quality of life improvements stemming from enhanced technological infrastructure.

The new network promises multi-gigabit internet speeds with 99.9 percent reliability, positioning local residents and businesses to fully participate in the digital economy. For businesses, Comcast Business offers scalable connectivity and cybersecurity solutions, potentially attracting new economic opportunities to the region.

Comcast's broader commitment to digital equity is evident through its Internet Essentials program, which has connected over 2.2 million Californians since 2011. The company has invested more than $130.5 million in cash and in-kind donations to support digital skill development and connectivity programs across the state.
